Depression Counselling

With Damian Morgan BSc Hons in Counselling and Psychotherapy

Depression is a common but serious mood disorder. It causes severe
symptoms that negatively impact how a person feels, thinks and acts, which
in turn may affect their daily activities such as sleeping, eating or working.
Depression symptoms can vary in severity. Feelings of sadness and/or loss of
interest in life are common.

Other frequently seen symptoms are continuous
tiredness/lack of energy, loss of appetite/overeating, trouble
sleeping/oversleeping and difficulty in concentrating or making decisions.
Low self-esteem and feelings of guilt as well as thoughts of death and suicide
are some of the more serious affects.

Counselling has proven to be beneficial to people that suffer depression. My
initial work with clients involves providing them with a safe non-judgemental
place in which they can discuss their everyday issues. Together we explore
the challenges they face and introduce strategies and self-care techniques to
support them in the present. We may also look at where the root causes of

the depression originate. Gaining an awareness of the reasons, why we feel
how we feel, can sometimes dissolve the often asked questions “what’s
wrong with me” or “why am I like this”, opening the door to healing.
Depression counselling can also be beneficial to clients suffering with severe
depression who are on prescribed medication. We would look to work
closely with their GP with an objective of decreasing the medication as the
counselling work progressed.
